Loud Booms Heard during Shake in New England, USA, 16 October 2012

4.0 earthquake centered in Maine rattles New England. People living in the New England area are reporting hearing loud booms right before a 4.0 earthquake hits the area. The earthquake occurred at 7:12 p.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said. The epicenter was four miles from Hollis Center, which is about 20 miles west of the state’s largest city, Portland. Initially, the USGS put the magnitude at 4.6, but later downgraded it to 4.0.

If you can remerber, I reported a similar event in New Jersey on October 5 2012.

  1. I felt the quake then later that night, around midnight, I was awoken out of bed by that strange metallic scraping noise that people have been hearing around the world. Sounds like it is coming from the atmosphere and is unlike anything I have ever heard. I went outside and listened for ten minutes or so until I was too cold and freaked out to listen anymore.
