Watch the historic breakup at the Ilulissat Glacier, Western Greenland on May 28, 2008. Do you feel the power of this enormous ice mass quetching and moving?

This sequence of the historic breakup at the Ilulissat Glacier in Western Greenland was recorded by the directors, Adam LeWinter and Jeff Orlowski, of Chasing ice on May 28, 2008.

The calving event lasted for 75 minutes and the glacier retreated a full mile across a calving face three miles wide.

The height of the ice is about 3,000 feet, 300-400 feet above water and the rest below water.

It is genuinely astonishing – the volume of the collapse is apparently 7.4 cubic kilometres.

Note how the system progressively destabilises. The failure event is absolutely fascinating. Just amazing!
