Widespread tsunami watches and warnings after mag 8.0 earthquake near Solomon islands – February 5 2013

A powerful earthquake has struck near the Solomon islands, triggering tsunami warnings for numerous places, including: New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. Tsunami watches for Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia were later upgraded to warnings. Within minutes, NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center had 6 buoys picking up a “tsunami event”. A one metre wave has been reported in the Solomon Islands. Five aftershocks were recorded in the hour following, ranging in strength from 5.6 to 6.4. At present, no warnings or watches have been issued for British Columbia, but statements are updated on an hourly basis to keep assessing the tsunami threat for the Western coast of Canada. – Daily Mail
