A moderate earthquake hit southern Mexico early Sunday, shaking buildings in the capital of Mexico City and sending frightened people into the streets. There were no early reports of damage.

The quake had a magnitude of 5.8 and struck at 12:19 a.m. local time Sunday about 76 miles south of the Mexican capital. The epicenter was 14 miles west of the town of Jolalpan in Puebla state. It had a depth of 33 miles.

Electrical service went out in parts of the city, several transformers suffered explosions illuminating the sky during the earthquake.
