What is the eerie Paulding Light phenomenon?
Also known as “The Dog Meadow Lights”, this glowing orb has been a mystery in Upper Michigan for over 40 years and remains unexplained to these days.
This weird light phenomenon can be observed on almost any night outside of Paulding, Michigan near Watersmeet off Highway 45 on Robins Pond Rd.
There are some haunting legends for this phenomenon. Some believe it is the spirit or ghost of a railroad switch man holding his lantern that was crushed about forty years ago.
Others suggest that it is the ghost of an engineer that was murdered along the old railroad grade that runs parallel to the road where the light appears.
Another story tells about a man that was looking for his lost little boy in the woods with a lantern. The man was hit by a train and his ghost continues to search for his son!
Some people even have claimed to have seen the “GRIM REAPER” floating across the road near the light!
Some scientists say earthquakes left small cracks in the bed rock that allow radioactive gases to escape and glow. Others scientific theories range from radioactive gas, anomalies in the earth’s magnetic field, glowing plasma, to swamp gas.
A group of research students at Michigan Tech examined the mysterious glowing orb and present their hypothesis for this amazing light phenomena in the following video.
But no matter what it is, you are still fascinated and spooked while viewing this bizarre light as it starts walking towards you!
Jeremy Bos needs to do more research on old train lines. There was a train that ran on that grade from 1887 to 1941 when it was removed. It was owned by C & NW.
