Around 100 dolphins were seen and photographed near Squamish, at the end of Howe Sound in Blind Channel like in this video of Rick Rolston shot in Howe Sound on Friday. (The show really takes off @ 0:45)

Why are thy so fast, so noisy? Does something scare the hell out of these dolphins?

The dolphins were probably feeding on a local abundance of herring. But according to witnesses, the dolphins weren’t alone… Around 15 orcas were close behind, probably looking for a meal. The dolphins are pushed back and… the whales were totally dominating them. One whale would throw the dolphin and it would land and crash back into the ocean and then two whales would jump up and smash it as it’s falling, as reported by CBC.

Now this video features Orcas hunting a pod of dolphins near Vancouver Island (off Nanaimo) on February 4 2014:

Here is what Here another video published by Krystal Hansen and showing the dolphins, many of which came in quite close to Nexen Beach.

Dolphins in this area are pretty rare

According to CBC, dolphins mostly disappeared from the Georgia Strait around 40 years ago. Sightings are pretty rare. This is a great sign that programs to clean up pollution along the local harbours, including False Creek, are working.

Let’s hope that such sightings will become more common all over the world.
