When I first saw the photograph I thought it was an oarfish… But it is actually a DEAL FISH or RIBBONFISH. The rare one-metre (3ft 3in) long specimen was found by Mr Dougan and his son on a Yorkshire beach at Hornsea on May 20, 2014. The Deal Fish normally inhabits colder and deeper (up to 1,000 metres) waters north of Scotland. So it’s pretty rare to find it in the North sea. Moreover, with global warming, it would be expected that this rare deep-sea species move even further north. So there’s probably something else altering their health.
This weird and rare deep sea creature is not an OARFISH but a DEAL FISH (Ribbonfish)
First I thought it was an oarfish! But actually, it's another deep sea creature!
