Eerie space weather phenomenon: This red sprite was captured by Harald Edens above thunderstorms in New Mexico on July 18 2014

Harald Edens photographed this deep blood-red sprite on July 18, 2014, from the Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research. The luminous reddish flashes appeared over a large thunderstorm system in the sky of New Mexico and was visible to the naked eye to everybody looking at the very right moment!

Although still unexplained, sprites (large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds) are a true space weather phenomenon like noctilucent clouds, meteors, and some auroras.

The mysterious sprite phenomenon was only accepted by the scientific community in 1989, after sprites were photographed by cameras onboard the space shuttle.
