Most people living in Cateura, Paraguay are poor. It’s one of the poorest slums in South America built on top of the Asuncion’s trash dump. Inhabitants live in and from garbage.

Although the people of Cateura may be the poorest of the poor, they are proud. The life of their slum is vibrant, intense, smelly.

To give children and youth another horizon and new perspectives, one of the garbage pickers, “Cola” decided with local musician Favio Chávez to build instruments and to teach the town’s children to play music. As no money was available for real new instruments, they decided to make instruments from trash.

Landfill harmonic introduces the story of the Recycled Orchestra hoping to bring attention to Cateura’s need for improved living conditions.
