Active Region 2158 has just unleashed a Major X-Class Solar Flare peaking to X1.6 at 17:45 UTC this afternoon. A powerful Full Halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has followed this eruption. It is heading to Earth. It could impact on earths magnetic field late September 13 into 14, 2014. Strong geomagnetic storm are possible, which could mess up some power grids, satellites and radio transmissions. Associated with this event was a Type II & IV Radio emission with a velocity of 3750 km/s and an R3 Radio blackout. An amazingly fast moving storm!

This earth-directed solar flare is considered extreme on forecasters’ scale, but just barely. They can knock some power grids offline temporarily, damage satellites and disrupt radio transmissions. But they expand the colorful northern lights.
