There is a sacred sinkhole cave – cenote – under Chichen Itza’s grand Kukulkan Castle Pyramid.

This amazing discovery could shed new light on the ancient Maya civilisation.

The sacred lake is 35 (105ft) metres across and over 20 metres (60ft) deep.

The cenote could provides new insights into why the pyramid was built at this site in the Yucatan peninsula.
