Papakura Geyser at Te Whakarewarewa Valley has started shooting water up to 4m in the air after bubbling for the last 18 months.

The famous Geyser was lying dormant since 1979 and entered a new phase of activity late this week. Sign of incoming seismic unrest?

The geyser, which was thought to be dead, has clearly entered phase two of its recovery.

The first phase started 18 months ago when the geyser overflowed and started regaining some heat.

Papakura geyser temperature has increased from mid-90C to 100.9C over the past 18 months. A significant increase and a sign of increasing volcanic and seismic activity?
