A swarm of more than 90 minor earthquakes hit the Teide volcano, Tenerife on Sunday, October 2, 2016. A this could announce the next big eruption in the Canaries.
The tremors hit the East flank of the Teide volcano on the island of Tenerife. The series of more than 90 earthquakes streched over 11 hours from 7am to 6pm.
The epicenter of the vast majority of these minor quakes – M0.5 to M1.6 – was situated between 8 to 14km.
The series started with a M1.6 earthquake 40km deep beneath the source of the cedar.
As shown in the next diagram, the seismic activity of the island was relatively calm and constant until beginning of October 2016.
As explained in the book entitled ‘Teide volcano : geology and eruptions of a highly differentiated oceanic stratovolcano’:
The 2004 increase in low-magnitude seismicity in Tenerife – only a ‘volcanic unrest’ for some authors – was most probably related to a deep injection of magma arrested at an early stage. This seems coherent with a similar process on the island of El Hierro which culminated in a submarine eruption in 2011.
So in both cases, the injection of magma was the source of seismicity! Was it again the case on October 2, 2016?
Although there is only a small chance these intrusions perforate the crust to trigger a volcanic eruption, I would say yes, we have the same geologic process operating right now on Tenerife.

There was also a 5.2 out from here at the Azores this weekend. This tri-plate boundary there is always on my mind as if it pops, a lot of coastal western Europe will take a big hit. Check 1755 quake that caused a tsunami that wiped out Lisbon. Not a million miles away either!
