Volcanic eruption update
Activity at Rincon de La Vieja (Costa Rica), Fuego and Santiaguito (Guatemala), Sinabung (Indonesia) and Piton de La Fournaise (Réunion)
Residents of Buenos Aires de Upala reported a loud sound like the noise of a jet on May 23, 2017, at 10:20 am, as the volcano Rincon de La Vieja erupted, expelling water, gases and sludge along its northern slope and reached the Penjamo River in Upala.
A seismic station on the opposite side of the volcano recorded a signal associated with an eruptive episode lasting a minute and a half.
In Guatemala, lahars are reported at the Fuego and the Santiaguito volcanoes. At Fuego, the weak to moderate lahar descend mainly through the Canyon Santa Teresa (Fuego) and carries volcanic material, blocks with diameters of about 2 meters, trunks and tree branches. The 10 meters wide and one meter high lahars are accompanied by steam collumns and generate sounds produced by the collision of blocks and debris that.
The Conred reports a lahar descending by the Finca Filadelfia, draining the ashes of the Santiaguito.
The activity of Sinabung remains high on May 24, 2017 with several explosions releasing a heavily loaded ash plume.
The activity of the Piton de La Fournaise is decreasing. Seismicity has gone from 40 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes and 22 deep VT earthquakes, on 18 May to 8 superficial VT earthquakes and 1 deep on 21 May. On the 22nd, no earthquake was recorded.
A field campaign carried out on 22.05 made it possible to make more precisely map of the deformations associated with the magma injection of 17 May to the northern flank. The maximum displacements at the terminal cone have not exceeded 35 cm.
