Radioactive plutonium particles were airborne at Hanford: Alpha contamination confirmed

Investigators have confirmed Alpha contamination measured in spots at Hanford. That means radioactive plutonium particles were airborne.

Contamination has now spread to outside of a demo zone at the Hanford Site in Washington State.

Officials at Hanford say the ‘low-level’ contamination has been detected on sidewalks, a vehicle gate and also an area where workers keep their protective breathing equipment. ollowing video by DahBOO7:

This is a heads up for anyone down wind of this site. The air monitors did go off and they have released workers from the facility.

As described on the Hanford Facebook pageAt approximately 10:30 a.m. (PST) this morning, about 350 employees of the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP) at the Hanford Site were released from a precautionary take cover that was established approximately three hours earlier after an air monitor set up in an outside demolition area sounded an alarm due to the detection of low levels of contamination.

Employees at PFP have been released from the Facility Take Cover. Low-levels of contamination were found near the demolition zone, including on sidewalks, near a station where employees receive protective breathing equipment, and near a vehicle access gate. A fixative (adhesive) has been applied to these areas to prevent further spread of contamination.

The incident followed the collapse last month of a tunnel at a separate Hanford facility that contained nuclear waste, prompting another evacuation.
