Fifteen graves dating from the Merovingian era, which lasted from the 5th century to AD 751, have been discovered near the present cemetery during roadworks in Theißen, a hamlet of Zeitz, Germany.

Among others, archeologists unearthed a woman with an iron bar through the chest, a GIANT warrior, and several horses buried in this mysterious necropolis.

Woman’s skeleton with an iron bar through her chest

Among the most surprising remains are those of a woman aged between 16 and 18, buried face-down “with her hands tied and an iron bar piercing her chest. It seems that she was buried this way so that her soul would not abandon the tomb. Reasons for this may be that she was disabled or malformed, had special, perhaps inexplicable and thus frightening abilities, or that she was simply regarded as a witch,” as explained by the lead archeologist Nexus News Feed.

Archeologist believe that the iron bar piercing the chest through her back was to prevent a resurrection. Her head facing the earth and oriented to the east – usually west – was to point the ‘dying soul’ away from the living.

Archaeologists also excavated the body of a 2-meter-high man – very tall for the time period – with a sword and a spear. The remains of the giant man are probably those of a warrior, perhaps a leader.

Three horse burials and a bunch of bones

Meanwhile 3 horse skeletons have been unearthed. Archeologists believe there is no relation with to the dead, although they can be seen as a mean to travel to the other world, when looking at other ancient civilisations.

In addition, the archaeologists unearthed a grave in which human bones were piled up. They haven’t found any plausible explanations for this mass grave.

These archeological findings were made this summer near the present cemetery.
