Large earthquakes are currently getting rarer these last weeks. The last quake with a magnitude larger than M6.0 was recorded 25 days ago in West Java, Indonesia.

The month before, larger earthquakes occurred on average every 3 days (9 earthquakes larger than M6.0) and two months ago every two days (18 earthquakes larger than M6.0).

This quiet seismic period is kind of SCARY, knowing that a tremor is caused by a sudden release of strain in the earth’s interior (meaning the crust or mantle), because the strength of the straining material is exceeded by the strain that has accumulated within that material.

So if the strain is not being released, it’s building up and could end in a catastrophic megaquake somewhere around the world.

But the questions are where and when it is going to happen. Any ideas on that?
