Deep M6.8 earthquake rattles Bolivia after M6.1 earthquake hits south of Fiji Island (maps) – Volcanic eruptions in Indonesia, Japan and Costa Rica

A strong M6.8 earthquake hit Bolivia at 13:40 UTC on April 2, 2018 at a depth of 557.2 km (346 miles) 13.1 km (8.1 miles) NNE of Carandayti. There are 120 000 people living within 100 km (62 miles) and 9 931 000 people are estimated to have felt shaking. A few hours before, a M6.1 earthquake hit South of the Fiji Islands.

A phreatic eruption occurred on April 1, 2018 at 13:42 WIB at the Sileri crater of the volcanic complex of the Dieng Plateau / Central Java in Indonesia. The eruption was accompanied by a projection of mud at 150 meters height covering an area of 50 meters by 200 meters. The eruption was preceded by a black smoke emission, but no toxic gases were released.

The Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica erupted twice on April 1, 2018, with plumes rising 300 and 700 meters above the crater, respectively.

 

Finally, the Sakurajima volcano in Japan erupted again on April 1, 2018 from two different craters simultaneously: the Minamidake and the Showa. This is the first eruption of the crater Showa since December 2017.
