Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Reunion Island erupts again powerfully – Alert level raised to 2-2 – Four eruptive cracks form – long and rapid lava flows – Hell on Earth

Following the crack eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise on April 4, 2018, a progressive increase in seismicity on April 27 evolved into a seismic crisis, accompanied by a rapid deformation indicating that magma is spreading to the surface, around 8:15pm on April 27, 2018, finally leading to a furious eruption on the south flank of the volcano, in the Rivals crater area at 11:50 pm.

The area is cracked by at least 4 erupting fissures. Lava flows are growing reaching several hundred meters. As a result, Alert 2-2 “eruption in progress” has been claimed , starting this Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 00:30am.

Public access to the Fouqué enclosure, from the Pas de Bellecombe trail or from any other trail, as well as from aircraft is prohibited until further notice in the volcano area. Here some impressive pictures of the second eruption of Le Piton de la Fournaise this year:
