A dust storm and a huge wall of sand engulfed parts of the East Valley on Thursday evening, closing roads and creating very reduced visibility on stretches of the I-10 as well as multiple power outages in Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, and Chandler due to high winds and downed power lines.

State Route 347 was closed south of Riggs, due to low visibility from blowing dust. For a time, Interstate 10 was shut down, in both directions, at Milepost 219 near Picacho. It has since been reopened.

This latest monsoon storm comes, seven years to the day of a haboob that hit the Valley, which garnered national and global attention.
