A cluster of earthquakes shook the Santa Cruz Mountains on Thursday afternoon. Less than 20 seconds separated the two largest quakes, which hit about 2:35 p.m. near Boulder Creek.
The first, a magnitude 2.8, was centered about 12.5 miles west-northwest of the town and the second, a magnitude 2.5, was centered about 13 miles in the same direction.
According to the USGS, four smaller earthquakes ranging from magnitude 1.4 to magnitude 1.9 were reported in the area between about 2:10 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The San Andreas fault runs through the region. In 1906, the fault produced a magnitude 7.9 earthquake that killed more than 3,000 people and destroyed 28,000 buildings.
