At least 21 people have been killed after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit southwestern China, state media said.

The quake struck at 13:00 local time (05:00 GMT) in Sichuan province at a depth of 10km (6 miles).

The impact severed telecommunications lines and triggered mountain landslides that caused “serious damage”, local media reports say.

Some 21 million people in Sichuan’s capital Chengdu were earlier ordered to stay home because of Covid rules.

The epicenter of the quake was at Luding, a town in a remote mountain region located about 226km southwest of Chengdu, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Tremors shook buildings in Chengdu and the neighbouring mega-city of Chongqing, leaving roads blocked and cutting telecommunications lines in areas home to more than 10,000 residents, according to broadcaster CCTV.

The shocks also forced some power stations to shut down in the areas of Garze and Ya’an, the Chinese broadcaster said.

More than 500 rescue personnel have been despatched to the epicentre, while workers laboured to clear roadblocks caused by landslides, according to state broadcaster CGTN.

Chengdu residents reported seeing people running out of their high-rise apartments in a panic after receiving earthquake alerts on their phones.

There were many people who were so terrified they started crying,” Laura Luo, an international PR consultant, told news agency Reuters.

When the shaking began, “all the dogs started barking. It was really quite scary“.

Some of my neighbours on the ground floor said they felt it very noticeably,” Chen, a resident of Chengdu, told AFP news agency.

But because Chengdu is currently under epidemic management, people aren’t allowed to leave their residential compounds, so many of them rushed out into their courtyards.

Chengdu is the latest city to be locked down by Chinese authorities on Friday, in an attempt to stem the rise in Covid cases.

The latest disaster comes months after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake tore through Sichuan in June. Sichuan is a earthquake-prone area, as it lies along the eastern boundary of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.

The latest disaster also called into memory an 8.0-magnitude quake which hit Wenchuan county in northwest Sichuan in 2008, which killed 70,000 and caused widespread destruction. [BBC, USGS]

  1. Now if this had happened when the water behind Three Gorges Dam (or whatever major dams were near the epicenter) was at 168 meters of height that dam would in all likelihood would have collapsed. They dodge a bullet this time thanx to their drought

    • That’s why I think they have been draining it on purpose. Just like those in CA. Also, Hoover dam. Drain them and blame it on the drought. Pretty good cover.

    • @Gary,

That looked about like Northridge to me. Same amount of swinging to lights, and same sloshing to aquariums? Not saying they don’t fudge numbers, but that one looked like a 6.8.

      • 50cal,

They’ve been fudging the numbers for about 30 years now. Started right after Mr Richter passed. Just what I read but makes sense as they seem to try and keep from too much detail in any disaster reporting they do. They had one in Indonesia they reported as a 6.8 a few years ago. Saw some videos later. Ground liquified. Buildings sank. Cargo ship was couple hundred yards from the ocean. Video showed from above the actual moment. Solid ground looked like the ocean sloshing about. Who knows for sure, but a very reliable source says they often take 2 to 4 points off. Guess how the scale works isn’t so much what’s happening at the center, but how far it reaches and duration. If that’s true, it would be difficult to determine from images of local damage. You can’t trust anything they report, if they report it at all.

  2. See those aquariums in the video? That’s what Northridge quake did in my house. What a mess. Earthquakes are a royal pain. You never know when they will stop. All the people on lockdown from the kung-flu scam had to flee to their courtyard areas. Building could easily topple and crush them.

    • Death toll at 65. Millions are on kung-flu lockdown with robot drones flying around telling people to remain home. Millions are ordered to kung-flu quarrantine camps as well.

This is what the satanic elitists want for the entire world. F ’em, and may they burn in hell for all eternity.
