Powerful explosions have rocked the area around Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.
“In what appeared to be renewed shelling both close to and at the site of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, IAEA experts at the ZNPP reported to Agency headquarters that more than a dozen blasts were heard within a short period of time in the morning local time,” the IAEA said in a statement.
Renat Karchaa, an adviser to the head of Russia’s Rosenergoatom nuclear power company, said shelling around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear site was ongoing.
“They not only shelled yesterday, they are shelling today, shelling right now. As of now, about 15 hits at nuclear power plant facilities have been recorded. Any artillery strikes on the nuclear plant put nuclear safety at risk,” Karchaa was quoted as saying by Russia’s TASS news agency.

“Thank God there has been no radiation release,” Karchaa said, adding that no one was hurt.
The IAEA team could see some of the explosions from their windows, the statement added, but the damage so far has not been critical for nuclear safety and security.

IAEA’s director general has renewed his urgent appeal to Russia and Ukraine to implement a nuclear safety and security zone around the nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhia as soon as possible.
Grossi engaged in intense consultations with both sides about establishing such a zone, but so far without an agreement.
“I’m not giving up until this zone has become a reality. As the ongoing apparent shelling demonstrates, it is needed more than ever,” he said.

Russian nuclear power operator Rosenergoatom says the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has come under Ukrainian shelling, but no radiation leak has been detected.
Adviser Renat Karchaa said the shells had been fired near a dry nuclear waste storage facility and a building that houses recently spent nuclear fuel, Russian news agency TASS reported.
The Russian army has accused Kyiv of staging a “provocation” by shelling the territory of the Zaporizhzhia plant that is under its control in southern Ukraine.
Kyiv “does not stop its provocations aiming at creating the threat of a man-made catastrophe at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant”, it said in a statement.
In contrast, Ukraine’s nuclear energy firm has accused the Russian military of shelling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and hitting its infrastructure facilities at least 12 times in the morning.
Energoatom said Russia was once again “putting the whole world at risk”.
The company said on Telegram that the list of damaged equipment indicated that the attackers “targeted and disabled exactly the infrastructure that was necessary for the restart of 5th and 6th power units” and the restoration of power production for Ukrainian needs.

Israel’s military intelligence chief has claimed Iran is near to escalating its nuclear program with 90-percent-enriched uranium, widely deemed ‘weapons grade.’
In an address to a conference of Tel Aviv University’s Institute for National Security Studies, Major-General Aharon Haliva said Monday he saw “at this point time… no real danger to the regime” from domestic protests but that “the moment is coming…when Iran entertains enrichment at 90 precent, even if only symbolically.” He said this would present “the greatest test of the international community.”
Shortly before leaving office 2021, then president Hassan Rouhani said Tehran had reached the capacity to enrich to 90 percent, and would do so “if one day our reactors need it.” This was just two years after Iran began enriching above 3.67 percent, the limit set by the 2015 nuclear agreement abandoned by the United States in 2018.
While 90-percent-enriched uranium can be used in some research reactors to produce medical isotopes, Rouhani’s remarks were seen as an attempt to secure leverage in talks to revive the 2015 agreement, the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), and so remove US ‘maximum pressure’ sanctions introduced in 2018.

Hacktivist group ‘Anonymous’ that has focused its cyber operations on Iran since the popular protests started earlier this month, says it has made many state accounts inaccessible.
The group claimed on Tuesday that it accessed many government accounts and made them inaccessible, without providing any details about how they can prevent the government from accessing its own money.
The group said it will protect the money because it belongs to the Iranian people. The only way the government can be denied access to its money is if the funds are transferred abroad, which is unlikely given Iran’s lack of international banking ties.
During the past few days, Anonymous has hacked several Iranian banks, including Melli and the Sepah banks – the latter linked to the country’s Revolutionary Guard — as part of its ongoing operation against the government of Iran in solidarity with the popular protests triggered by the death in custody of the 22-year-old woman Mahsa Amini.
The group also claimed it had hacked the database of Iran’s parliament and the Supreme Audit Court, releasing the phone numbers and other data of all lawmakers.
The group also attacked the official website of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei last week. Both the Persian and English versions of Khamenei’s website are still down.
The group has also disrupted the IRGC-affiliated Fars news agency and the news website of the state broadcaster.
If the government blocks the people from accessing the Internet, Anonymous will block the government’s access, the group has said.
