Indonesia’s Mount Merapi, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, erupted on Saturday (Mar 11), spewing out smoke and ash that blanketed villages near the crater.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, the country’s disaster mitigation agency said.

Images broadcast on local outlet Kompas TV showed ash-covered houses and roads at a village near the volcano, located on Java Island, near Indonesia’s cultural capital Yogyakarta.

The Merapi Volcano Observatory estimated the ash cloud reached 3,000m (9,600 feet) above the summit.

Authorities established a restricted zone of 7km from the crater after the eruption, which was recorded at 12.12pm (0512 GMT).

“To anticipate potential danger from Mount Merapi eruption, the public is advised to stop any activities in the potential danger area,” agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said in a statement on Saturday.

Nearby residents should also expect “disruptions” from ash and be aware of potential dangers from volcanic mudflow, particularly if it rains near the volcano, Muhari said.

At least eight villages near the volcano have been affected by volcanic ash, an officer at one of Merapi’s observation posts said in a statement.

The volcano’s last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced the evacuation of some 280,000 residents.

It was Merapi’s most powerful eruption since 1930, when about 1,300 people were killed. An eruption in 1994 left about 60 people dead.

The volcano’s alert status has remained at the second-highest level since 2020 after showing renewed activity.

Indonesia, which has nearly 130 active volcanoes, sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

  1. Last two weeks there were many small to medium earthquakes in that area. Three days ago I mentioned we will probably see volcanic activity very soon. Bingo!

    • You’re treating this horrendous disaster like it’s a good thing 50cal. Since you cursed me and my family with your foolish prayers, I worry you’ve done the same here.

      • Instead you could say… Well my friend it sits on the ring of fire and the is the country that contains the most active volcanoes in the world… So the odds an eruption occurs there is kind of bigger than in every other places on earth…
This would bring your knowledge// intelligence in front, with a little accent of irony… Yes please try to be intelligent…
        Thanks

    • Well, it wasn’t a longsbot bet. Look at the cocos plate/carribbean plate right now. That’s what has been red dotted for weeks. Any moment the bridge for illegal aliens from s america through c america to mexico could be history. Sheesh what a tragedy that would be, eh?

    • Today, the earthquake map around Indonesia, Papua, and New Zealand having many small quakes. You can see the edge of the plate and it is full of red dots of activity. Probably alot is small aftershocks since Papua and New Zealand areas had 5mags earlier this past week. Or it could be volcano activity too on the smaller red dots. I watch this site at least ten times a day.
