A rare M5.1 earthquake shook the border region of North Carolina and Virginia near Sparta, North Carolina, 8:07 A.M. EDT on August 9, 2020.
Strong shaking was felt in many parts of NC and Virginia. Minor to moderate shaking was felt in parts of West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and South Carolina.
More than 1,500 reports have already been filed on the USGS website, just 30 minutes after the quake.
While this region of the Appalachians does receive earthquakes, this tremor would tie for the strongest ever recorded there in 1916.

Meanwhile, the USGS has manually revised the depth of the quake to 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) now. This is the usual depth for tectonic quakes in the eastern US.

Due to the rather high magnitude of the shaking, strong intensities are still expected for the epicentral area, but no severe damage is likely. Residents reported feeling the quake between 3-30 seconds depending of their distance from the epicenter.
Residents around Sparta and other towns near the epicenter should prepare for aftershocks, which are usually more than a magnitude weaker than the mainshock. Aftershock sequences of M5.0 quakes can last many days and weeks, but they usually do not cause any additional damage.
A smaller M2.6, which was felt by local residents, preceded this quake earlier today and some weaker ones yesterday.

Prisoners in Tehran prison are forced into labor by guards

According to the reports that Iran International has received, some of the guards in Tehran prison (Fashashuyeh) are coercing prisoners into forced labor.
One of the prisoners told Iran International that the guards tell some prisoners that they are to be transferred to Ward 4 of the prison which has twice the population and terrible sanitary conditions, but if they do the manual labor, they will not be transferred.
The guards and employees use the prisoners to do their chores this way.

The attorneys of Amir Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi, and Mohammad Rajabi, the three young protesters that were sentenced to death for participating in the last year’s November Protests were allowed to meet with them in Tehran prison.
Babak Paknia, the attorney of the three announced on his Twitter page that he met with the prisoners along with the other attorney, Mostafa Nili, and they were in good spirits.

Israel and the United Arab Emirates have reached a deal to normalise relations, with Israel agreeing to suspend its controversial plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.
In a surprise statement by US President Donald Trump, who helped broker it, the countries called the accord “historic” and a breakthrough toward peace.
Until now Israel has had no diplomatic relations with Gulf Arab countries.
But shared worries over Iran have led to unofficial contacts between them.

“Now that the ice has been broken I expect more Arab and Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates,” he told reporters in the Oval Office, saying there would be a signing ceremony at the White House in the coming weeks.
Earlier, in response to a President Trump’s tweeted announcement, Mr Netanyahu wrote in Hebrew: “Historic day.”

Iran launched its “Great Prophet 14” military exercise on Monday in the Strait of Hormuz.
The annual exercise, held by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, featured an attack on a fake U.S. aircraft carrier using helicopters, speedboats and military divers.
IRGC Commander-in-Chief Hossein Salami said that strategically, Iran operates defensively, but that its tactical approach is entirely offensive, according to a report by Iran’s Channel 1.
Gen. Gholamali Rashid, the commander of the Khatam Al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, said that Iran will swiftly respond to any threats or “destabilizing actions,” according to the report.
The report also showed IRGC forces launching missiles and carrying out other aspects of the exercise.
The replica vessel, patterned after a U.S. Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, complete with dummy aircraft, was spotted being dragged out to sea on Monday by U.S. satellite imaging firm Maxar Technologies. The vessel, which is actually a barge, was also used in Iran’s “Great Prophet 9” exercise in 2015.

(CNN)One woman died and three people were hospitalized in serious condition after a major explosion in a residential area of Baltimore, according to Blair Adams, Public Information Officer for the Baltimore City Fire Department.
Three homes were reduced to rubble in a major gas explosion, Adams said.
Officials are investigating the cause and crews are searching for people who might be trapped inside. Overhead video of the scene showed first responders searching through the rubble.
“It’s a labor-intensive rescue,” Adams said. “You have homes that were pretty much crumbled … a ton of debris on the ground, so we’re pulling and trying to comb through to see if we can find any additional occupants.”

Yes, we felt the earthquake. We live outside Charlotte, NC. Dishes in the cabinets were rattling. Other than that, not much at all.

We live about an hour south west of Sparta in Moravian Falls, NC. This is the strongest earthquake we have ever felt. We raise goats, and it sounded and felt like the goats were running from one end of the roof to the other (which could never happen). It was like a wave and the roof make the most noise. The rattling glasses in the cupboards could also be heard. The last earthquake I felt (the one that hit DC some years back) felt like the floor was shaking. Very different from this one.
