An enormous ice circle was captured by a drone floating in the Kalix River at Forsbyn, 75 kilometres north of Luleå, Sweden.
Compare the size of the trees and houses with that of the ice circle … It’s gigantic…
Ice has gone wild in Sweden. Torgny Johansson captured an enormous ice circle floating in the icy Kalix River in the far north of Sweden on November 22, 2015.
According to the photograph, the giant circle of ice was not spinning around and looked as if it was frozen solid.
Although relatively rare around the world, they form quite frequently in northern Sweden.
But this one is just too huge. This is probably one of the largest ever seen in the world. Look at the size of the trees and houses in comparison. This ice phenomenon is gigantic. The drone was about 60-70 metres high to take the picture:
Ice circles appear in slow-moving rivers in cold climates where a part of the current moves in the opposite direction to the main stream. As soon as the surface water freezes the circling currents create such an ice disc.
Here a video of another ice circle that formed in a North Dakota’s river.
[…] A giant ice circle was photographed and videoed last month in Sweden. But such icy discs have also been seen in Canada and England. […]
