Popocatépetl volcano is extremely active these days. After the eruption of an atomic cloud on June 12, 2016, the volcanic peak has exploded again this morning.
This strong explosion at 9:32 am was preceded by 2 smaller explosions at 4:10 pm and at 11:47 pm, on June 22, 2016.
Within the last 24 hours, the volcano also produced 479 low-intensity exhalations, which produced small emissions of gas, steam and ash. This is the second place in terms of exhalation for 2016 after 492 back in May 2016.
Additionally, the monitoring system recorded 21 minutes tremor of low amplitude and three volcanotectonic events at 04:53 am, 07:14 am and 07:14 am with magnitude 1.7, 1.5 and 1.7 respectively.
CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments.
