And suddenly, the sea along the north-west coast of the Australian island of Tasmania became electric blue at night.

This phenomenon, also known as bioluminescence, is caused by billions of single-cell algae or plankton called Noctiluca scintillans.

The bodies of these microscopic algae are filled with fatty inclusions, which will produce glowing blue color under mechanical or chemical stimuli… the so-called bioluminescence effect.
