Two volcanoes in Alaska, USA and a volcano in Japan exploded on May 17, 2017.
Alaska is currently experiencing an anomalous high number of earthquakes.
Alaska normally records 3,000 quakes monthly. But now, seismologists have already reached the monthly average in just 10 days. This may explain why two Alaskan volcanoes, Mount Cleveland and Mount Bogoslof, have started erupting almost parallely on May 17, 2017.
The explosive eruption at Bogoslof volcano started on May 17, 2017 at 6:32 am UTC / May 16 at 22:32 AKST and lasted about 73 minutes.
An airplane pilot reported an ash cloud at 34,000 feet asl (10,363 m) drifting southwest. Flashes associated with the eruption have also been detected. Consequently, the AVO changed the aviation code to red and the volcanic alert level to Warning.
The last pictures of the volcano were taken on May 8 and show a small vent filled with a lake of hot and salty water on the north-western coast of Bogoslof.
Just 3 hours before, a small explosion detected by the seismic and infrasonic system shook Mount Cleveland on May 17, 2017 at 3:17 UTC. The aviation code is Orange and the volcanic alert level is Watch.
Finally, a small eruption ocurred at Sakurajima olcano on May 17 at 15:49 local time. The plume, dominating the volcano, was scattered by the winds away from Kagoshima.
The volcanic unrest continues around the world, especially along the Ring of Fire.
