Gunung Marapi, located west of Sumatra, erupted several times on June 4, 2017. This volcano is not to be confused with the Merapi on Java.

According to the PVMBG, the first eruption occurred at 10:10 am, accompanied by a plume rising 300-400 meters in the air. The second explosion, more powerful, took place at 10:22; the ash plume rose to 600-700 m. A third one followed at 10:46 with a plume of ash and gas rising to over 400 meters above the summit.

Official sources describe these eruptions as typical for Marapi, including ballistic projections around the crater and the emission of ash plume but rarely accompanied by pyroclastic flows. The Marapi is on alert II since August 3, 2011. The alert level has remained unchanged since then with aprohibited zone of 3 km. radius around the crater.

The volcanic activity has started again at Karymsky volcano after a period between January and May of inactivity.

On 4 June, the KVERT reported a plume of ash rising to 2,000 meters asl. before drifting for 85 km to ENE. The aviation code is orange, as ash explosions can occur at any moment, accompanied by ash plumes more than 5 to 6 km. height.

Again in Kamchatka, the Shiveluch volcano ejected a plume of ash and gas to an undetermined height at 11:35 local on June 3, 2017. Pyroclastic flows hae also been observed on the flanks of the volcano. Satellite data show that the plume of ash and gas has already drifted more than 135 km southeast of the volcano. This must have been a very powerful explosion, which partially destroyed the old crater.

Meanwhile on the boarder between Chile and Argentina, the alert level of Copahue has been raised to Yellow on 4 June following an increase in energy and size of the ash plume emanating from the main crater.

  1. The COPAHUE Volcano is not in Chile. It’s located in Argentina, the Argentinian Patagonia (Province of Neuquén). It is being monitored by the National Geological Service in Chile, but the volcano is in Argentina, in the Andes mountains, close to the border with Chile.
