Protecting your skin from the rays of the sun is more than slathering on sunscreen. It's about choosing the right sunscreen for your skin as well as about getting the greatest health benefits in the process. Here we share five all-natural sunscreens and how to use them.

Some of the best skincare instruction comes to us from Ayurveda. These ancient teachings have a lot say about how to best care for your skin so it stays healthy and supple throughout your life. You can read more about it here .

While it is important to apply sunscreen on your skin, you should also be aware that all sunscreens are not made equally. Some come in higher SPFs (Sun Protection Factor) and this will determine how well they will protect your skin from the sun.

Do Natural Sunscreens Really Work?

Natural sunscreens work perfectly when used correctly. Natural sunscreens work by sitting on top of the skin and deflecting damaging/harmful UV rays away from the skin.

It is advisable to buy a sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum” which implies that it protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. Ensure that your sunscreen has an SPF of 30 or greater as this will help protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

How to Choose a Natural Sunscreen for Your Skin Type?

The best way to know which natural sunscreen works best to protect your skin and treat other skin concerns such as dryness, oiliness or wrinkles, is to choose a product that is specially made for your skin type.

1. Normal Skin

If you have normal skin, you can use any type of natural sunscreen. However, it is advisable to look for a product labeled “broad spectrum” which means that it will protect your skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays. You can also buy a natural sunscreen that has SPF 30+ as it will provide additional protection from the damaging rays of the sun.

2. Oily Skin

If your skin tends to be oily, you might want to take a careful approach when purchasing a natural sunscreen. It is advisable to get a product with gel or alcohol or lighter lotions. Also, purchase broad-spectrum protection sunscreens that will provide maximum protection for your skin.

3. Dry Skin

People of all ages especially those who have sensitive skin can have dry skin. Natural sunscreens can help rejuvenate dry skin. It is advisable to purchase everyday moisturizers that contain natural sunscreen which will give the skin ultimate sun protection. You can also mix your moisturizer with natural sunscreen and apply it to your face and body.

4. Acne-prone Skin

If you have acne-prone skin, do not avoid moisturizers and natural sunscreens because they will give you maximum protection and prevent your acne from breaking out. By avoiding moisturizers and natural sunscreens, your skin might become overly dry and this will lead to over secretion of sebum which will result in more breakouts.

Instead, opt for a light moisturizer with natural sunscreen. Also, choose a product that is labeled “non-comedogenic”, that is, it will not cause acne.

5. Mature Skin

As the skin ages, brown spots and wrinkles can appear and the skin might begin to lose its ability to retain moisture. It is advisable to buy a “broad spectrum” natural sunscreen which contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which will protect the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and provide maximum brown spot protection.

5 All-Natural Sunscreens Your Skin Will Love

There are many benefits you can derive from using natural sunscreens such as coconut oil, raspberry seed oil, zinc oxides, shea butter, titanium dioxide.

1. Coconut Oil

It protects the skin from sunburn when it is used correctly. It also protects the skin against free radicals and chronic inflammation.

How to Use it

Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to your skin and spend about 20 minutes in the sun on the first day. Apply another thin layer of coconut oil to your skin and spend about 30 minutes in the sun on the second day. After about two weeks of following this routine, you should be able to expose yourself safely for several hours after applying coconut oil.

2. Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is another mineral which acts as an active UV filtering ingredient in sunscreens. It works by blocking absorption of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, which can cause sunburn and skin cancer.

How to Use it

Start with a small amount which is about the size of a pea and rub it between the palms of your hands and smear it over the parts you want to cover. Work it into your skin by rubbing the area firmly for about 30 seconds. Titanium dioxide is white in colour but when you rub it into your skin correctly, it will leave a sheen to your skin. The white coloration quickly fades away after a short period of time.

3. Raspberry Seed Oil

It protects skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays of the sun. It contains excellent anti-oxidants and vitamins E which help to fight free radicals as well as improve skin elasticity.

How to Use it

Add some drops of Raspberry seed oil in your cream or moisturizer and rub it into your skin before you go out into the sun. You can reapply it every two hours for maximum effectiveness.

4. Shea Butter

Shea Butter provides elasticity and hydration to dry skin as well as improves the efficiency of UVB filters.

How to Use it

Simply apply it on your skin and rub it gently until it is evenly spread across your skin before stepping out and staying in the hot sun for prolonged periods. You can reapply shea butter every two hours for maximum protection

5. Avocado Oil

Due to its high proportion of monosaturated fats, avocado oil provides a protective layer over the skin and it also helps to nourish dry and damaged skin. Avocado oil protects the skin against wrinkles.

How to Use it

Avocado oil is a 15 SPF sunscreen and you can apply it to the area that you want to protect from the sun by rubbing it into your skin thoroughly. Reapply it every two hours if needed for maximum protection and effectiveness.

Cons of All-Natural Sunscreens

1. Many people tend to use natural sunscreens incorrectly because they don’t use enough. And this can make them vulnerable to sun damage.

2. Natural sunscreen can be less desirable due to its consistency. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are often thick compared to chemical sunscreens. This makes people put on less rather than more.

3. Some natural sunscreens don’t live up to their SPF claims and this makes them less desirable for use.

Conclusion of All Natural Sunscreens

Natural sunscreens are very good for the skin as they protect the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Choose the right one for your skin and always remember to purchase “broad spectrum” labeled natural sunscreens.

    • The sun puts off two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB rays and sunscreen blocks them both. No chemical sunscreen – no matter the SPF can reliably effective over 2 hours, especially if you go swimming or sweat. There’s been a trend away from chemical sunscreens lately because they are made from chemicals like oxybenzone, octisalate and octinoxate because they have serious downsides. This is where coconut oil comes into play if you are in search of a natural sunscreen that isn’t full of chemicals. Coconut oil blocks only about 20% of the sun’s UV rays. You can apply it in tandem with your natural sunscreen.
