VIDEO: This is Lismore, Australia – after the news crews left

0

It’s been 2 months since the devastating floods in Lismore, New South Wales, Australia. The media has moved on. Promised help from the government has barely trickled in, so local residents are left to fend for themselves. This is a real-life, real-time look at how collapse happens in a wealthy, supposedly advanced society.

Along the east coast of Australia, including Lismore in the NSW Northern Rivers, people are still living with the consequences of the latest wave of apocalyptic natural disasters.

As floods battered communities, we were stunned by footage of houses underwater while residents escaped down submerged streets in tinnies and canoes. But after the news crews left, residents stayed to face the fallout – homeless, unable to work or go to school, and struggling to rebuild, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They helped neighbours and demanded accountability. But they should not have to face this alone.
