There is a time bomb in the Pacific.
A huge concrete dome filled with plutonium from US nuclear bomb tests threatens the Pacific Ocean. And it is now cracking up!
This concrete structure dubbed ‘The Runit Dome’ looks like a temple or even an UFO in the paradisiac Pacific Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands.
But the out-of-this-world construction also named ‘The Tomb’ contains 101,498 cubic meters of radioactive debris contaminated by plutonium during the American nuclear tests conducted in the Marshall Islands.
Plutonium is one of the most toxic radioactive material with a half-life of up to 24 000 years ago.
Cracks are building up
The Runit Dome is built to last but actually shows cracks and its ground is not sealed.
No one knows exactly how much plutonium has come already out in the lagoon, the Pacific, and in the world’s oceans.
Scientists and environmentalists are sounding the alarm.
Typhoons or storm surges could destroy the concrete slabs or set the direct environment of the dome under water.
Moreover, the sea level could rise by one meter by 2100 meaning that the area would be flooded.
Finally, nothing is protecting the deadly dome. On the one side trees, on the otherside a small wall of heaped stones.
