As if all crises had to come together… While many countries are in lockdowns, other natural disasters of unprecedented proportions hit. Here a compilation of the latest apocalyptic floods that currently disrupt lives in many countries around the world.

Yemen torn by once-in-a generation floods

Initial reports indicate that more than 100,000 people across Yemen have been impacted by torrential rains and flooding since mid-April.

Aden, Abyan, Lahj, Marib and Sana’a governorates and Sana’a City have been the worst affected.

Health authorities in Aden Governorate have confirmed seven deaths, including four children. Two people are missing, and deaths and injuries have been reported elsewhere.

Countless families have lost everything,” said Ms. Lise Grande, Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen.

This tragedy comes on top of the worldwide health crisis, which comes on top of the pre-famine last year, which came on top of the worst cholera outbreak in modern history. Bad, bad, bad!

Severe Floods force evacuations in Fort McMurray, Canada

Ice jams caused the Athabasca River to spill its banks.

The resulting floods have forced mandatory evacuations in parts of Fort McMurray, Canada as the province of Alberta tries to stem the spread of the the health crisis.

The fact that flooding season and in due course, forest fire season, is coinciding with the virus epidemic in Canada is posing some special challenges.

Flash flooding kills at least 4 dead in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia – Somalia also hit

Flash floods and locusts are ravaging parts of eastern and southern Ethiopia & the Horn, as the battle against the pandemic continues.

At least 4 people were killed and several others injured by flash floods in the city of Dire Dawa, Ethiopia on April 24, 2020.

The flooding caused widespread damages to homes and infrastructure.

Cause of the flooding is heavy rain that triggered the overflow of the normally dry Dachata River that runs through the city.

Meanwhile, heavy rain is flooding parts of Somalia. Many deads and infrastructure collapses:

Heavy rains within the Shabelle basin both in Ethiopia and inside Somalia have led to a drastic increase in river levels along the Shabelle River.

The river levels are expected to continue rising along the entire channel of Shabelle as more waters from the Ethiopian highlands are still streaming in.

Floods destroy shelters in displacement camps in Chad and Burkina Fasso

Following heavy rainfall, thousands of homes on the Maïngama site (located in the Grande Sido département, Moyen-Chari Province) were damaged, forcing 430 households of 2,062 individuals to flee their destroyed shelters and seek refuge in the shelters of other households within the same site.floodlist

In Burkina, thousands were displaced on April 19. Local media reports that many of those in the camps have been left without shelter after tents and material possessions were washed away.

Thousands displaced in Kenya

The ongoing “long rains” in Kenya continue to cause flooding in western and eastern counties.

Kenya Red Cross says as many as 30,0000 people have been displaced since March.

Meanwhile 29 people died in the massive mudslides and flooding in the border areas of Elgeyo Marakwet and West Pokot counties on 18 April.

Deadly floods and mudslides hit northern Tanzania

Thousands of people have been affected by flooding and mudslides in Arusha and Kilimanjaro, northern Tanzania, over the last few days.

Two fatalities were reported in Arumeru District, Arusha Region, where at least 50 homes have been destroyed.

More than 2,700 households in Moshi district have been made homeless by floods after more than 50 houses have been swept away by flash floods in Hai District.

At least 8 dead in Djibouti

At least 8 people have died in flash flooding in Djibouti.

Djibouti city and surrounding areas were the worst affected after flash flooding struck on 21 April after overnight heavy rain.

Initial estimates speak from 18,000 households (approximately 110,000 persons) destroyed or damaged across Djibouti city and its suburb of Balbala.

Flooding kills more than 20 dead in Angola and 30 Congo

Over 20 people are dead (11 but counting) or missing (13) after severe weather hit western Angola on April 18, 2020.

More than 113 families were evacuated after the Cambamba river broke its banks and at least 89 people displaced in Libolo after 14 homes collapsed due to heavy rain.

Meanwhile more than 36 people died in flooding in South Kivu Province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Heavy rain caused the Mulongwe river to break its banks in Uvira city, causing significant, destroying at least 3,500 homes and damaging more than 15,000 homes as well as 7 bridges.

Almost 78,000 people are now without shelter and no drinking water.

  1. I predicted all of these May 5 2020 still we have time more quakes and floods and Pandemic COVID-20 will be pick up again. Sweden for example has now over 3000 people infected. Do not take cruises even if they give you so cheaply. All rooms are still has COVID-20 and we shall see indeed if any one take cruises will be last time will be seen alive. Governments will not spend billions to free them you are by your own indeed. In middle east and Latin America people are falling down due to COVID-20 make attacks their liver and kidneys. Stay home do not spread COVID-20 NOW?
