Ocean surges have washed ashore at Tokomaru Bay after a major tsunami alert was issued on March 4-5 morning in new Zealand.
It followed a series of powerful earthquakes off the North Island.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s tsunami threat level has been downgraded to a Beach and Marine threat, with authorities saying the “largest waves have now passed.”
GNS Science updated its advice after residents evacuated after a previous Land and Marine threat warning was issued.
People who evacuated coastal regions are now able to return but the advice remains “to stay off beach and shore areas.”
