During the extreme cold outbreak of late January 2019, residents around Chicago and other parts of the Midwest reported sudden nighttime bangs powerful enough to wake people and shake homes.
The sounds were widely attributed to cryoseisms — commonly called frost quakes.
Cryoseisms can occur when saturated soil rapidly freezes and expands. Stress builds in frozen ground until it fractures suddenly, producing a sharp explosive crack and localized vibration.
Unlike tectonic earthquakes, frost quakes are generally shallow and extremely localized.

Daytime Bolide Explodes Over Cuba and Drops Meteorites Near Viñales
A spectacular daylight fireball crossed western Cuba before producing powerful sonic booms heard around Viñales.
Witnesses reported a brilliant object fragmenting in the sky followed by loud explosion-like sounds.
Fragments subsequently reached the ground around Viñales, turning the event into one of the best scientifically documented meteor-boom cases of 2019.
The recovered meteorites were classified as an L6 ordinary chondrite.

A bright fireball crossed the southeastern United States and was seen from Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.
