A powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit northwestern Ecuador on may 18, 2016.
And that right in the same area affected by the deadly earthquake on April 16, 2016.
At the moment it is unknown whether the quake, which occurred at 2.57 local time (7.57 UTC), has caused casualties or serious damage, although it has been felt strongly in Quito and in neighboring Colombia.
The epicenter of the quake is situated near the border between the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabi, the most affected by the last April’s earthquake.
In the series of 10 aftershocks, five tremors were recorded at magnitudes greater than M4.5 (M5.8, M5.4, M4.8, M4.6).
In several districts of the Ecuadorian capital people left their homes and gathered on public places. Power cuts have been reported in the area of the earthquake.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued any warnings.
