A strong and deep M6.0 earthquake struck Fiji region at a depth of 626.1 km (389 miles) at 5:11 pm UTC on April 18, 2017.
The epicenter was located 242.1 km (150.4 miles) E of Levuka (population 8 360), 297.9 km (185.1 miles) SE of Lambasa (population 27 949) and 334.8 km (208 miles) E of Suva (population 77 366), Fiji. All in all, about 2 168 people living within 100 km (62 miles).
No tsunami was created.
Just 40 minutes after, another strong and shallow M6.0 earthquake hit a depth of 10.7 km (6.6 miles) the Peru-Ecuador border region at 17:49 UTC on April 18, 2017. Ecuador’s IGEPN is reporting M6.1 at a depth 16.8 km (10.4 miles).
The epicenter was located 123.3 km (76.6 miles) NNW of Trompeteros (population 0), 254.4 km (158.1 miles) WNW of Iquitos (population 437 620), Peru and 303.4 km (188.5 miles) SE of Boca Suno (population 20 313), Ecuador.
About 19 622 people living within 100 km (62 miles). Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that might have contributed to losses.
