Iran Buried in Meters of Snow After Major Storm Kills at Least 8, Injures 145 During the Celebrations of the 1979 Islamic Revolution Anniversary

Thousands of people have been stranded on icy roads as heavy snowfall in northern Iran has blocked all roads, from highways to rural dirt trail.

The heavy storm has killed 8, injured 145 and as many as 80 have been reported missing. Power, water and natural gas supplies have been cut off in many places.

It’s been already four days since the storm, but thousands of people are still without water and electricity.

At least eight people have been killed and 145 more injured in the snow-hit province of Gilan.

Many rural roads are still blocked and over 250,000 people are suffering from a power outage. Because I you can imagine… It’s freezing over there and people can’t heat.

It’s a snow disaster! Heavy snowfall hit 50 out of 52 cities of the province and many areas were buried in 40 inches (1 meter) to 80 inches (2 meters) of snow in less than 24 hours.

And that during the celebrations of the 1979 Islamic revolution’s anniversary. Can you imagine?

The storm also disrupted power, natural gas and water supplies, as well as internet and telecommunication services across the province.

Some old people had to be freed from their homes.

Just in the town of Rasht where more than 700,000 live, the storm had left nearly 100,000 homes and businesses without power, telephone and mobile communications.

Samaneh Ekvan wrote in a tweet that people did not trust weather forecast for this week, as they thought the government wanted to prevent them from travelling around in order to keep city streets busy during the celebrations.

As of Wednesday, thousands of people were reportedly stranded on the roads leading to the province.

Videos show passengers on the road from Tehran to Rasht abandoning their cars and walking to their destination.

The snowstorm was forecasted days ago, but the urban and government officials did not respond to the warning and took no necessary preventive measures.

Reza Kashef blamed crisis management officials for not taking the warnings issued by other parts of the government seriously.

More than 250 kilometers (155 miles) to the west of Rasht, the province of Ardebil has also been hit by heavy snowfall. Rescue teams have already been deployed and helped up to 800 villages in Ardebil. Meanwhile, thousands of people in at least 400 villages are cut from the world as rural roads are still blocked in large part of the province.

Parts of Khuzestan including Susa (Shusha), have experienced the first snowfall in written history, where some 130 villages have been cut off from the rest of the country.

Again, this powerful snowstorm hit Iran during the celebrations of the 1979 Islamic revolution’s anniversary. So you understand that officials didn’t care at all about those poor guys freezing in the dark. For the Islamic Republic Minister of Energy this last snow storm was unprecedented and much more extreme than the previous record in 2004.

  1. Rocket Attack Hits Near US Embassy In Iraq Capital

    Baghdad, Feb 16, 2020 (AFP) –

Multiple rockets hit near the US embassy in Iraq’s capital early Sunday, an American military source said, the latest in a flurry of attacks against US assets in the country.

The assault sent warning sirens blaring across the diplomatic compound but it was unclear exactly what was hit and how many rockets made impact, the US source and a Western diplomat based nearby told AFP.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

AFP’s correspondents heard multiple strong explosions followed by aircraft circling near the Green Zone, the high-security enclave where the US mission is located.

It was the 19th attack since October to target either the embassy or the roughly 5,200 US troops stationed alongside local forces across Iraq.

The attacks are never claimed but the US has pointed the finger at Iran-backed groups within the Hashed al-Shaabi, a military network officially incorporated into Iraq’s state security forces.

In late December, a rocket attack on the northern Iraqi base of K1 left one US contractor dead and unleashed a dramatic series of events.

Washington responded with retaliatory strikes against a hardline Hashed faction in western Iraq and days later, an American drone strike in Baghdad killed top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani and his right-hand man, Hashed deputy chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Hashed factions have vowed revenge for the pair’s death, insisting US troops should immediately leave Iraq.

Sunday’s attack came just hours after one of the Hashed’s Iran-backed factions, Harakat al-Nujaba, announced a “countdown” to ousting American forces from the country.

He tweeted a photograph of what he claimed was an American military vehicle, adding: “We are closer than you think.”

Team of Canadian lawyers bring lawsuit against Ali Khamenei

A team of Canadian lawyers is suing the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ali Khamenei, and several high-ranking commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on behalf of the family members of Ukrainian plane crash victims.

According to Reuters, the legal team has asked for $1.1 billion in compensation for the shooting down of the Ukrainian plane.

57 passengers of the Ukrainian plane were Canadian nationals and some others were permanent residents of Canada.

According to Reuters, the main plaintiff of the case has remained anonymous in order to protest his Iranian family from the regime of Iran and has only been referred to as “John Doe”.

Mark Arnold is co-lead counsel, who has represented clients in several suits against Iran in the past, including a 2017 appeal decision that led to the seizure of some Iranian assets in Canada.

The suit alleges that the downing of the plane was “an intentional and deliberate act of terrorism.”

Last month, Ukrainian flight 752 was shot down by two direct missiles from the IRGC air defense and all of its 176 passengers were killed.

Until three days after the incident, the Islamic Republic officials claimed that the plane had crashed by accident and not due to a missile attack.

The suit was filed Jan. 24 in Toronto, but it is not clear whether it has been served on defendants in Iran.
