Cumbre Vieja now has the honour of being longest active volcano in recorded history on La Palma. Monday marked the 85th day of activity – taking it past Tehuya, which erupted for 84 days in 1585.

Ahead of it lie a handful of other historic eruptions – Tao and El Clérigo on Lanzarote (86 days in 1824), Narices del Teide in Tenerife (99 days in 1798) and the six-year-eruption of Timanfaya on Lanzarote in 1730.
While many thought the eruption on La palma was almost finished, the volcano reminded everybody that it was still very active after releasing this huge volcanic ‘bomb’, rolling down its slope:

Meanwhile, around 33,000 residents in the districts of Tazacorte, Los Llanos de Aridane and El Paso have been advised to remain indoors until air quality improves due to the high level of sulphur dioxide. Readings of SO4 reached 750 microgrammes per square metres at the El Paso weather station.

Meanwhile, lava flows continue to invade new terrain, as the most active lava streams continue to flow freely in the central zone and have been overflowing in the district of Las Norias, invading land which previously had managed to remain unscathed. Lava flows continue to feed the main delta in Las Hoyas.
According to Copernicus’s latest radar image, the lava flow now measures 1,226.8 ha (+3.3 ha in ~4 days and has destroyed more than 2,910 destroyed buildings (+14)
