Students, who signed up received EKGs and ultrasounds to check heart functioning, went to Bixby High School Saturday afternoon for preventative heart screenings.
Parents said it was important for them to bring their children out to test them for these heart conditions which might otherwise go undetected.
12-year-old Hunter Cox loves sports, so it was important to him to get his heart screened to keep him on the court and the field.
“Because with sports, they need to check that you’re healthy and that you’re not going to pass out on the field or have a seizure,” said Hunter.
Hunter’s dad said he wanted to have the screening done to be safe because of how active he is.
“It was important for us because he’s really athletic and really into sports, and we just wanted to make sure everything checks out ok, and we noticed this was available, so we wanted to take the opportunity to come do it,” said Matt Cox, Hunter’s dad.
The owner of HeartCheck said it is important to them to make sure they catch these heart conditions before it’s too late.
“Unfortunately, a lot of times, if a child does have a heart condition, there are no signs or symptoms. It is kind of a silent, hidden danger,” said David Kuluva, the owner.
Their goal is to stop the next tragedy.
“Most people have heard of the tragic stories of a young athlete dying suddenly on the field and no one really understanding or knowing why or what happened, and oftentimes, it’s related to the heart,” said Kuluva.
Heart Check screenings are available to any member of the public who wants one. [NewsOn6]
