The National Hurricane Center’s detailed post-season analysis places Gustav’s transition to hurricane strength just before 1200 UTC on September 11, 2002.
That corresponds to shortly before 8:00 a.m. EDT.
By passing that point on September 11, 2026 without a hurricane anywhere in the Atlantic basin, the current season moved beyond Gustav’s formation time.
The Atlantic therefore established a new benchmark for the latest first hurricane in the modern satellite era.
2013 Also Had to Wait Until September 11
There is another important season in the comparison.
In 2013, Hurricane Humberto also became the first hurricane of the season on September 11.
Humberto reached hurricane strength earlier that morning, however, meaning Gustav’s later formation time in 2002 remained the more precise record threshold.
The distinction matters because simply comparing calendar dates hides several hours of difference.
In 2026, even that later Gustav threshold has now been crossed.
Five Tropical Storms — Zero Hurricanes
The 2026 Atlantic season has not been completely inactive.
Five named storms had formed by September 11:
- Arthur;
- Bertha;
- Cristobal;
- Dolly;
- and Edouard.
But every one of them remained below hurricane intensity.
According to the National Hurricane Center’s season summary, the strongest storms so far have still failed to cross the hurricane threshold of 74 mph / 119 km/h sustained winds.
For a season already at the climatological peak, that is highly unusual.
2026 Is Far Behind the Normal Hurricane Pace
By this point in a typical Atlantic season, hurricanes are no longer unusual.
Several would normally already have formed.
NOAA’s 1991–2020 climatology averages approximately:
- 14 named storms during an entire season;
- 7 hurricanes;
- and 3 major hurricanes.
By September 11, however, 2026 had produced five named storms, no hurricanes and no major hurricanes.
The contrast becomes even clearer when looking at accumulated cyclone energy.
Atlantic Cyclone Energy Is Exceptionally Low

One of the strongest background influences on the 2026 Atlantic season is El Niño, which can increase vertical wind shear across important parts of the tropical Atlantic and make sustained cyclone intensification more difficult.
El Niño is part of a broader system of ocean-temperature and climate oscillations that redistribute heat through the tropical oceans and alter atmospheric circulation patterns around the world.

Atlantic storms do not all develop through the same mechanism. Tropical cyclones draw most of their energy from warm ocean water and organized convection, while extratropical cyclones and windstorms are driven primarily by strong horizontal temperature contrasts and atmospheric fronts.
Why Wind Shear Matters So Much for Hurricanes
A hurricane requires thunderstorms around its center to remain vertically organized.
When upper-level winds differ sharply from winds closer to the ocean surface, that organization can be disrupted.
Convection may be blown away from the circulation center.
The storm can become tilted.
Dry air may penetrate its core.
And even over very warm ocean water, intensification can stall.
That is why warm water alone does not create hurricanes.
Successful tropical cyclone development requires a combination of:
- warm ocean water;
- deep atmospheric moisture;
- relatively low vertical wind shear;
- an organized disturbance;
- atmospheric instability;
- and sufficient Coriolis force away from the equator.

But El Niño Is Not the Only Factor
It would be too simplistic to say that El Niño alone caused the record.
Atlantic hurricane activity is controlled by several overlapping atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
These include:
- vertical wind shear;
- sea-surface temperatures;
- mid-level atmospheric moisture;
- Saharan dry air and dust;
- upper-level pressure patterns;
- the strength and location of tropical waves;
- and short-lived weather patterns that cannot be predicted months in advance.
NOAA explicitly cautions that seasonal hurricane activity reflects the interaction of multiple factors rather than one climate signal acting alone.
NOAA Had Already Downgraded Expectations for 2026
Before the season began, NOAA already favored below-normal activity.
By its August update, confidence had increased significantly.
NOAA assigned a 75% probability of a below-normal Atlantic hurricane season.
The updated forecast called for:
- 7–13 named storms;
- 2–6 hurricanes;
- 0–2 major hurricanes;
- and seasonal ACE between roughly 30% and 90% of the long-term median.
So the weak season itself was not completely unexpected.
What is remarkable is just how far into September the basin has progressed without producing even one hurricane.
What About Earlier Hurricane History?
The wording of the record matters.
This should be described as the latest first Atlantic hurricane in the reliable satellite era, not automatically as the latest first hurricane in all recorded Atlantic history.
Before satellites continuously monitored the ocean, tropical cyclones far from land could be missed entirely.
Ships supplied much of the observational record, and vast areas of the Atlantic had little or no direct coverage.
Historical databases therefore become increasingly uncertain as we move backward in time.
For example, the reconstructed 1905 Atlantic season contains only one known hurricane, which did not reach hurricane strength until early October.
But comparing that event directly with modern observations is difficult because satellite monitoring did not exist.
Why the Satellite Era Is the Best Comparison
Routine satellite coverage transformed tropical meteorology.
Since the mid-1960s, meteorologists have been able to continuously monitor cloud systems across essentially the entire Atlantic basin.
That means a hurricane forming over an otherwise empty part of the ocean is extremely unlikely to escape detection.
Modern comparisons are therefore much more reliable than comparisons with storms reconstructed from ships, coastal observations and historical documents.
For that reason, the most scientifically defensible wording is:
2026 has now gone later without its first Atlantic hurricane than any season in the satellite era.
A Quiet Start Does Not Mean the Season Is Over
The record should not be interpreted as evidence that hurricane risk has disappeared.
The official Atlantic hurricane season continues until November 30.
Powerful hurricanes can still form well after the climatological September peak.
Past seasons with unusually late first hurricanes demonstrate this clearly.
After Gustav finally became a hurricane in September 2002, additional hurricanes followed later in the season.
And in 2022, a quiet August was followed by several September hurricanes, including Fiona and Ian.
A late beginning therefore does not guarantee a harmless remainder of the season.
Late First Hurricanes Tell Us Something — But Not Everything
Statistically, seasons with very late first hurricanes tend to finish less active than seasons that produce hurricanes early.
But there is substantial variation from year to year.

Periods of hostile wind shear or dry air may weaken, allowing a favorable window for rapid tropical development later in September or October.

Whether a hurricane finally develops tomorrow, next week or much later, the record has already become noteworthy.
The Atlantic entered the climatological peak of hurricane season with:

El Niño years often suppress hurricane activity.
Individual tropical storms frequently fail to intensify.
But getting all the way past September 11 without a single hurricane is different.
