A strong explosion occurred at Stromboli volcano this afternoon at 16:04:40 local time.
Lava bombs have been ejected from the crater and an ash plume of several hundred meters was produced, which quickly dissipated.
Bombs were landing on a vast area around the crater terrace including the viewing area on Pizzo.
Fortunately, no adventurers were present at the time of the eruption. There are no reports of damage or injuries.
The strong eruption occurred suddenly without significant precursors, showing that even during periods of relatively low activity, Stromboli volcano can be dangerous.
