3 powerful phreatic eruptions occur at Suoh volcano in Indonesia – sends tons of rocks and mud into the air

0

Without warning, a series of 3 powerful explosions occurred this morning, sending tens of thousands of rock and mud into the air at one of Sumatra’s most dangerous volcanoes known as Suoh in Indonesia.

What occurred was a cluster of phreatic eruptions… The last phreatic eruptions at the volcano are dated in 1933 and 1994.

The PVMBG volcano observatory reported that three phreatic explosions occurred at the volcano between 8:00 and 9:00 local time on 24 May.

Phreatic activity is represented as interaction with snow and/or ice, i.e. steam driven only, caused by overheated water flashing to steam.
