Senior officials are discussing whether and how to remove U.S. nuclear weapons from the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey since 1959.
Now, in the wake of the devastating earthquakes that killed more than 20,000, one of the question raised is why did the US stockpiled 50 nuclear bombs in one of the most geologically instabile regions of the world… Namely right on the East Anatolian Fault…

This week’s devastating earthquakes in Turkey occurred along the East Anatolian fault.
There are many NATO and US military bases in Turkey…
And at least 3 of them, the Incirlik Air Base (Province of Adana; Above map:8), the NATO Patriot missile battery (Province of Adana; Above map:9) and the Kurecik Base (location of missile defence radar; Province of Malatya; Above map:10) have experienced major shaking during the devastating quakes (compare the below map and the one above! The region of Adana and Malatya are situated in the second worst shade of red, meaning very strong shaking)…
Why is that dangerous, again? Because 20-50 nuclear weapons are stored at the Incirlik Air Base!
The US nuclear weapons at Incirlik Air Base
So, are there US nuclear weapons stored at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey?Most probably!
President Donald Trump appeared to confirm on October 16, 2019 that US nuclear weapons are being housed at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, making him the first US official to publicly acknowledge what has been considered an open secret for years.
In front of all cameras, Trump answered the following question: “One of the things that has been exposed by this Turkey situation is that as many as 50 nuclear weapons are at İncirlik Air Base in Turkey. How confident are you of those weapons’ safety?”
“We’re confident,” Trump said, and continued: “We have a great air base there, a very powerful air base.”
Moreover, a report by NTI from 2021, specifies that:
‘As part of NATO’s nuclear umbrella, Turkey continues to host approximately 50 U.S. tactical nuclear weapons on its territory at Incirlik Air Base.‘
The weapons — 50 of them, all B61 nuclear bombs, which can be dropped from F-16 and Tornado jet fighters — are among the Cold War’s hoariest relics. Another 130 of these bombs are stored at NATO bases in Belgium, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
The United States plans to upgrade the B61 bombs to the B61-12 and hopes to complete the process by 2026. In an 2022 article by Politico, they argue:
‘The $10 billion B61-12 Life Extension Program is managed by the Department of Energy and is meant to replace several earlier versions, including about 100 bombs stored at air bases in Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Turkey.‘
As reported by The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists in 2023:
‘Despite rumors in late 2017 that the weapons had been “quietly removed”, the New York Times reported in 2019 that US officials had reviewed emergency nuclear weapons evacuation plans for Incirlik, indicating that that there were still weapons present at the base.
‘This has been further reinforced by ongoing infrastructure work at nuclear weapon storage sites in Turkey (US Department of Defense 2022e). The number of nuclear weapons at Incirlik appear to have been reduced, however, from up to 50 to perhaps 20.
‘If the United States decided to withdraw the remaining nuclear weapons from Incirlik, it could probably do so with a single C-17 transport aircraft from the 4th Airlift Squadron at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington — the only unit in the Air Force that is qualified to airlift nuclear weapons.‘
So yes they have some nuclear bombs stored at this base… And, if the US had already removed the bombs, it would have made the headlines, similar to when Trump acknowledged the existence of nuclear weapons at the İncirlik base back in 2019…

According to a govt report: ‘
‘Troops stationed at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey were all accounted for Monday morning, and there were no casualties or major damage to the installation, according to base officials, after a deadly earthquake hit the country overnight, leaving tens of thousands of people dead.
‘While this is a developing situation, all U.S. government personnel assigned to the 39th Air Base Wing have been accounted for and we have no suspected or confirmed U.S. casualties at this time,” Incirlik Air Base shared on social media. “Additionally, no U.S. facilities on base have sustained major damage.”
So what does major damage mean, then? To me, this sentence means there have been some damage but we don’t want to say more…
So Biden, what did happen to the nuclear bombs? Are they still safe at Incirlik Air Base? Is a radioactive disaster on the horizon? Because this is not the last Big One this region of Turkey will experience…

Proxy wars are better for laundering money. Nukes would make land uninhabitable. EMP is more probable for mass extermination. Land is usuable, and without communications it would be harder to organize defense against invasion after an EMP attack.
