Look up this week. On the night of August 27–28, 2026, Earth’s shadow will swallow more than 96% of the Full Moon, leaving only a brilliant sliver untouched while most of the lunar surface turns dark copper, orange and red. It isn’t technically a total lunar eclipse — but it will come extraordinarily close.

August 2026 apparently wasn’t satisfied with giving us a total solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower.
Now Earth is about to throw its shadow across almost the entire Moon.
On the night of August 27–28, 2026, a spectacular deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across much of the Americas and parts of Europe and Africa.
At maximum eclipse, approximately 96.3% of the Moon’s visible disk will be inside Earth’s dark central shadow.
That leaves only a narrow brilliant crescent of direct sunlight while almost everything else is swallowed by Earth’s shadow.
And because some red sunlight still filters through Earth’s atmosphere and reaches the eclipsed lunar surface, much of the Moon may take on the eerie copper-red appearance associated with a Blood Moon lunar eclipse.
Almost a Blood Moon.
Almost total.
And potentially spectacular.
When Is the August 2026 Lunar Eclipse?
The eclipse occurs globally between the night of Thursday, August 27 and the morning of Friday, August 28, 2026, depending on your time zone.

The entire eclipse lasts about 5 hours and 38 minutes, while the visually dramatic partial phase lasts approximately 3 hours and 18 minutes.

96% of the Moon Will Disappear Into Earth’s Shadow
This is where the eclipse gets interesting.
It is officially classified as a partial lunar eclipse.
But only barely.
At maximum eclipse, roughly 96.3% of the lunar disk will lie inside Earth’s umbra — the dark central portion of our planet’s shadow.
Only a thin section of the Moon will remain directly illuminated by the Sun.
Visually, that means the eclipse may look remarkably close to totality.
Instead of the entire Moon disappearing into red darkness, observers should see a mostly dark copper-red lunar disk beside a narrow, intensely bright uneclipsed edge.
Earth will cover almost the entire Moon with its shadow — but miss totality by just a few percent.
Why Will the Moon Turn Red?
Earth blocks direct sunlight from reaching the eclipsed portion of the Moon.
But our planet doesn’t block every photon.
Some sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere before being bent toward the lunar surface.
As that light travels through the atmosphere, shorter blue wavelengths are scattered much more efficiently than longer red and orange wavelengths.
The remaining reddish light is refracted into Earth’s shadow.
That filtered sunlight illuminates the Moon.
The result can range from dull brown and copper to orange, brick red or deep crimson.
It is essentially the combined light of Earth’s sunrises and sunsets projected onto the Moon.
This atmospheric filtering is what produces the famous Blood Moon phenomenon.
But Is This Really a Blood Moon?
Technically, astronomers usually reserve the term Blood Moon for the reddish appearance of the Moon during a total lunar eclipse.
And this eclipse is not total.
A tiny portion of the Moon never enters Earth’s umbra.
So “almost Blood Moon” or “deep partial lunar eclipse” is scientifically more precise.
But with more than 96% of the lunar disk immersed in Earth’s shadow, most observers probably won’t complain about the terminology when the Moon turns copper-red overhead.
Where Will the August 2026 Lunar Eclipse Be Visible?
The eclipse will be visible from a huge portion of Earth’s night side.
The best views will come from:
- the United States
- Canada
- Mexico
- Central America
- much of South America
- western Europe
- parts of western Africa
North America is particularly well positioned.
Across much of the United States and Canada, observers will be able to watch the Moon move deeply into Earth’s shadow during the evening of August 27 and early hours of August 28.

You don’t need to watch all five and a half hours.
For the dramatic part, aim to be outside roughly 30–60 minutes before maximum eclipse and stay through maximum.
What About Europe?
Europe gets a much less convenient alarm clock.
The eclipse occurs during the early morning of August 28.
The partial phase begins at approximately:

- 03:34 BST in the UK
- 04:34 CEST across much of central Europe
Maximum eclipse arrives at approximately:

The problem is sunrise.
Across western and central Europe, the Moon will be sinking toward the western or west-southwestern horizon while dawn brightens the sky.
That means your observing location matters enormously.
A building, hill, mountain or row of trees on the western horizon could end the show early.
Switzerland: You’ll Need a Very Clear Western Horizon
For observers in Switzerland and nearby central Europe, the deepest part of the eclipse occurs close to sunrise and moonset.
Maximum eclipse arrives at approximately 06:13 CEST.
The Moon will be extremely low toward the west-southwest.
So if you’re planning to watch from Switzerland, find an observing location with a completely unobstructed western horizon.
A hilltop or open landscape looking away from mountains and buildings will give you a much better chance than a narrow valley or city street.
The Moon Will Look Enormous Near the Horizon
European observers may get an additional visual bonus.
Because the eclipsed Moon will be very low in the sky, it can appear unusually large.
The Moon isn’t actually swelling.
This is the famous Moon illusion.
When the Moon appears near familiar foreground objects — trees, buildings, mountains or the horizon itself — our brains perceive it as much larger than when the same Moon hangs high in an empty sky.
Put a dark red eclipsed Moon behind a distant mountain ridge and the effect can be spectacular.
It’s Also the August Sturgeon Moon
The eclipse occurs at full Moon.
August’s traditional full Moon is commonly called the Sturgeon Moon, a name associated with the historical seasonal abundance of sturgeon in the Great Lakes region of North America.
Other cultures and traditions have used different seasonal names for the same full Moon.
These names do not describe the Moon’s physical appearance.
A Strawberry Moon isn’t normally strawberry-colored.
A Blue Moon isn’t normally blue.
And a Sturgeon Moon does not contain significantly more fish.

How Does a Lunar Eclipse Happen?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the geometry becomes:
Sun → Earth → Moon.
Earth sits between the Sun and the Full Moon, causing our planet’s shadow to fall across the lunar surface.
Earth’s shadow has two principal regions.
The Penumbra
The penumbra is the lighter outer portion of Earth’s shadow.
From the Moon, an observer standing in this region would see Earth blocking only part of the Sun.
When the Moon first enters the penumbra, the resulting dimming is subtle and can be difficult to notice.
The Umbra
The umbra is Earth’s much darker central shadow.
From inside the umbra, Earth completely blocks the Sun.
Once the Moon begins entering this region, the eclipse becomes obvious.
A dark curved “bite” appears along the lunar edge and steadily grows.

There’s another beautiful piece of astronomy hidden in a lunar eclipse.
Look carefully at the edge of Earth’s shadow moving across the Moon.
It is curved.
Always.
More than two thousand years ago, ancient Greek astronomers recognized lunar eclipses as evidence that Earth is spherical.
A sphere casts a circular shadow regardless of its orientation.
So while you’re watching the Blood Moon, you’re also watching the enormous curved shadow of our entire planet projected hundreds of thousands of kilometers into space.
Why Don’t We Get a Lunar Eclipse Every Full Moon?
If lunar eclipses occur at full Moon, why isn’t there one every month?
Because the Moon’s orbit is tilted by roughly 5 degrees relative to Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
Most months, the Full Moon passes slightly above or below Earth’s shadow.
An eclipse only occurs when the Full Moon happens near one of the points where the Moon’s orbital plane crosses Earth’s orbital plane.
These alignment points are called nodes.
That’s also why lunar and solar eclipses often occur a couple of weeks apart during an eclipse season.
And August 2026 has provided a spectacular example.
August 2026 Has Been an Extraordinary Month for Eclipses
Just two weeks before this lunar eclipse, the Moon passed between Earth and the Sun.
On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse crossed parts of the Northern Hemisphere, with totality visible along a path including Greenland, Iceland and Spain.
Much larger areas saw a partial solar eclipse.
Then came the Perseid meteor shower.
And now the same celestial geometry has effectively reversed.
During the solar eclipse:
Moon’s shadow → Earth.
During the August 28 lunar eclipse:
Earth’s shadow → Moon.
Two weeks.
Two worlds casting shadows across one another.
You Do NOT Need Eclipse Glasses
This part is important.
Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to observe with your naked eyes.
You do not need:
- solar eclipse glasses
- solar filters
- special protective eyewear
You’re simply looking at the Full Moon becoming darker.
Binoculars can make the colors and boundary of Earth’s shadow much more impressive.
A small telescope can reveal individual craters and lunar terrain disappearing into the umbra.
How to Get the Best View
You don’t need sophisticated equipment.
But a little planning will dramatically improve the experience.
1. Check Your Local Eclipse Time
The eclipse occurs simultaneously worldwide, but your clock time and the Moon’s altitude depend on your location.
2. Find an Open Horizon
This is particularly important for Europe, where the Moon will be low during the deepest stages of the eclipse.
3. Check the Weather
The greatest astronomical alignment in the world is still defeated by a thick layer of clouds.
4. Give Your Eyes Time
As more of the Moon enters Earth’s umbra, the bright uneclipsed portion shrinks and your eyes become better able to perceive the subtle copper-red coloration.
5. Bring Binoculars
Not necessary.
But absolutely worth it.
6. Photograph the Moon With Foreground Objects
Because the Moon will be low for many observers, this eclipse offers an excellent opportunity to photograph it beside buildings, trees, mountains or recognizable landmarks.
Don’t Expect a Bright Scarlet Moon
“Blood Moon” creates expectations.
Sometimes unreasonable ones.
The eclipsed Moon does not necessarily become vivid blood-red.
Its actual appearance depends partly on conditions in Earth’s atmosphere.
Dust, aerosols, wildfire smoke and volcanic material can affect how much sunlight passes through the atmosphere and which wavelengths reach the Moon.
The eclipsed portion may therefore appear:
- orange
- copper
- brick red
- dark brown
- or surprisingly dim
And because this eclipse remains partial, the tiny uneclipsed section will remain dramatically brighter than the reddish portion.
When Will the Next Lunar Eclipse Happen?
The August 27–28 event is the last lunar eclipse of 2026.
The next lunar eclipse occurs on February 20–21, 2027, but that event will be penumbral and therefore much subtler.
For another dramatic deep eclipse, skywatchers will have to wait longer.
That makes this week’s 96% partial eclipse one of the best opportunities to watch Earth’s shadow engulf the Moon for quite some time.
Set an Alarm. This One Is Worth Getting Up For.
There are astronomical events that require expensive telescopes, dark-sky expeditions or specialist knowledge.
This isn’t one of them.
You need Earth.
You need the Moon.
You need a reasonably clear sky.
And depending on where you live, you may need a very inconvenient alarm clock.
At maximum eclipse, more than 96% of the Full Moon will sit inside Earth’s dark shadow, with much of its familiar white surface transformed into copper-red darkness.
So sometime late Thursday night or early Friday morning, step outside and look up.
You’re not merely watching the Moon change color.
You’re watching the shadow of the entire Earth move across another world.
