A Chinese military base for the island of Vanuatu?

Is China about to establish a military base on the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu? It depends whom you ask. Vanuatu and China on Tuesday denied a media report by Australia’s Fairfax Media that Beijing wanted to establish a permanent military presence in the Pacific island nation.

Australia’s Fairfax Media reported on Monday that China had approached Vanuatu to establish a permanent military presence in the South Pacific.

According to a report by Australia’s Fairfax Media published on Monday, the governments of China and Vanuatu have held preliminary discussions about this possibility.

But on Tuesday, both nations vehemently denied the reports. Vanuatu’s foreign minister, Ralph Regenvanu, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that no talks had taken place. China’s defense ministry implied the report was false.

Fake News? Vanuatu and China on Tuesday denied a media report that Beijing wanted to establish a permanent military presence in the Pacific island nation.

A Chinese military presence on Vanuatu would have major implications for the island’s neighbors in the South Pacific, putting Chinese warships less than 1,553 miles from Australia’s coast.

I would say that if we are talking about, there is surely something going there! What do you think?

  1. Well it would save them the time & trouble of making their own military islands like the ones in the South China Sea. It doesn’t take much to see that China has expansionist policies & they have had their eye on Australia & NZ for quite a while. As far as australia is concerned we should immediately call a draft of our young for military service & put all that video game shooting expertise to some good purpose. It’s high time they got off their butts anyway & now that women & gays want equal rights draft them too. Australia can’t depend on the US protection when they have their own wars to take care of. Australian politicians should be putting budget to border defence for years instead of eating lots of cake in think tanks like the “SSM vote” China has already been given deep sea ports in the NT & Melbourne & have been mining the crap out of Australia’s rich reserves & realestate for years. For our polices to act so surprised by this is the ultimate hypocracy. The world has changed & Australians had better WAKE UP! Or they’ll be speaking mandarin in the morning.

  2. We have a Medical clinic on the Island of Gaua in Northern Vanuatu. I have been going to this country for over 17 years now. As some of you might remember, the US had a big military base on the island of Santo dujring WWII and at the end of the war we dumped tons of military stuff in the ocean/bay just loutside of Luganville on Santo. It is a divers paradise to dive into the shallow waters to look at this old WWII stuff. BUT, the Chinese a couple years ago helped to modernize the airport on Santo. Was odd seeing Chinese military setting up x-ray machines and such. Now Luganville is an international airport thanks to the Chinese. So, just like what the US has done for years in helping developing countries, they do freebies with strings attached! So this does not surprise me at all. I have seen Chinese military there several times… so if they build a base it will be on Santo I bet close to where the US had there base in WWII.
