This stunning ancient Greek floor mosaic was just excavated in Zeugma, southern Turkey.
The mosaic is about 2200 years old and depicts the Nine Muses of Greek arts and sciences, who are said to have inspired all who engaged in those endeavors.
They were the daughters of Zeus, lord of all gods, and Mnemosyne, who represented memory. Here a clearer and zoomed picture of the incredible ancient mosaic:
Memory was important for the Muses because in ancient times, when there were no books, poets had to carry their work in their memories. Just thought you’d be interested to know.
Look at the conservation of the color! It is as new! But how was this so immaculately preserved? Probably because it was made of solid colored stone (no degradation) and was protected against erosion by a thick protective layer of dirt.
