Scientists unearthed a perfectly preserved cave lion cub with its head still resting gently on a paw after up to 55,000 years. The cub was between six and eight weeks old when it died for unknown reasons. Cave lions – once the largest big cats on the planet – lived in cold regions from Europe to Alaska. They are most closely related to the modern lion.

The extraordinary find raises hopes of cloning the long-gone species back to life. Well that’s another weird idea of some mad scientists.
