my grandma used to put these oranges with cloves on the heating units around xmass, I figured she just liked the smell, not waging a holiday war against bugs.

I’ll take a wasp over a fly landing on my food anyday. I have nothing to base this off of other then i see more flies on nasty shit than wasps. Also not a bug scientist so no idea if this has any worthwhile meaning
I remember this in Austria as well in the bakery, on all of the cakes just swarms of wasps.. but no one there seemed concerned by it!

Those are oranges with cloves in them, lots of bugs hate the smell. They are supposed to repel the wasps, not attract them, obviously it’s not working too well.
